SpaceX Rocket Landing 'Another Step Toward the Stars,' Elon Musk Says

The epic rocket landing SpaceX pulled off today (April 8) is a big step forward in humanity's march out into the cosmos, company founder and CEO Elon Musk said.

SpaceX managed to land the first stage of its Falcon 9 rocket on a robotic "drone ship" in the Atlantic Ocean during the successful launch of the company's uncrewed Dragon cargo capsule toward the International Space Station from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station this afternoon.

The first-of-its-kind touchdown is an important milestone in SpaceX's quest to develop completely reusable rockets, which Musk has said could revolutionize spaceflight by reducing launch costs by a factor of 100.

"I think it's another step toward the stars," Musk said during a post-launch press briefing today. "In order for us to really open up access to space, we've got to achieve full and rapid reusability. And to be able to do that for the primary rocket booster is going to [have] a huge impact on cost."

SpaceX has landed a Falcon 9 first stage once before, bringing the booster back on dry land at Cape Canaveral during a satellite launch this past December. But today's touchdown was the first successful drone-ship landing after four near-misses; similar attempts in January 2015, April 2015, January 2016 and March 2016 ended with the rocket hitting the drone ship but then toppling over and exploding on its deck

"The rocket landed instead of putting a hole in the ship or tipping over, so we're really excited about that," Musk said today.

Pre-COP22 (18-19 October 2016)

The Marrakesh pre-COP will be the last informal meeting before COP22.
It will bring together almost 70 ministers from the key influential countries in international climate negotiations. The meeting will be co-chaired by Ms Ségolène Royal, COP21 President, and Salaheddine Mezouar, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and incoming COP22 President. The pre-COP will help sketch out the key issues linked to the entry into force of the Paris Agreement. Morocco hopes to build a consensus on the need to complete the work programme produced in Paris by 2018.
The Paris Agreement will enter into force on 4 November 2016. The logical consequence is that COP22 will see the opening of the first Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA) during its second week.

Mars Curiosity: Facts and Information

The Mars Science Laboratory and its rover centerpiece, Curiosity, is the most ambitious Mars mission yet flown by NASA. The rover's primary mission is to find out if Mars is, or was, suitable for life. Another objective is to learn more about the red planet's environment.

Curiosity's size allows it to carry a host of scientific experiments to zap, analyze and take pictures of any rock within reach of its 7-foot (2 meters) arm. Curiosity is about the size of a small SUV. It is 9 feet 10 inches long by 9 feet 1 inch wide (3 m by 2.8 m) and about 7 feet high (2.1 m). It weighs 2,000 lbs. (900 kilograms). Curiosity's wheels have a 20-inch (50.8 cm) diameter.

Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory designed the rover to roll over obstacles up to 25 inches (65 centimeters) high and to travel about 660 feet (200 meters) per day. The rover's power comes from a multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generator, which produces electricity from the heat of plutonium-238's radioactive decay.

Alan Kurdi’s Story: Behind The Most Heartbreaking Photo of 2015

Alan Kurdi was one of a million. In the summer of 2015, the three-year-old Syrian boy of Kurdish origins and his family fled the war engulfing their country, hoping to join relatives in the safety of Canada. They were part of a historic flow of refugees from the Middle East to Europe this year, and they followed the dangerous route taken by so many others.

In the early hours of Sept. 2, the family crowded onto a small inflatable boat on the beach of Bodrum, Turkey. A few minutes into the journey to Greece, the dinghy capsized. Alan, his older brother Ghalib and his mother Rihanna all drowned, joining the more than 3,600 other refugees who died in the eastern Mediterranean(地中海) this year.

And that is where Alan’s story would have ended, were it not for the work of a photographer.

When Nilüfer Demir came upon the beach, the Turkish photographer for the Dogan New Agency said in a recent interview it was like a “children’s graveyard.” She took photos of Alan’s lifeless body. Alan’s body had washed up along the shore, half in the sand and half in the water. His sneakers were still on his feet.

Demer’s photographs, shared by Peter Bouckaert of Human Rights Watch on social media, went viral almost instantly. In death, Alan became a symbol of all the children who lost their lives trying to reach safety in Europe and the West, the face of the biggest story of 2015.

Blindfolded Muslim man stands with ''hug me if you trust me'' sign for social experiment - how will people react?

A Muslim man puts his blind faith in humanity and is duly rewarded in this heartening social experiment.

YouTube prankster and vlogger Hstar stood outside Stratford station in east London wearing a blindfold next to a sign that read: "People call me a terrorist because I'm a Muslim. If you trust me, hug me."

He then waited with his arms outstretched to see how people would respond.

At first several confused people walk past the sign and move on, and for a moment it looks like the experiment could emphasize the deep social divides felt in the wake of Brexit and Donald Trump's shock presidential election win .

But as soon as one woman on a mobile phone wanders over and hugs him, the floodgates open.

Soon the vlogger, real name Hassan Saleemi, is surrounded by well wishers, all queuing up to give him a cuddle.

An emotional Hassan, 24, then speaks to the camera after being overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers.

"After standing here for 30 minutes, I'm so happy to say that I live in a multicultural city that doesn't care if you're Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Sikh," he says.

"They respect you for what you are. They respect you for being human, and do you know what? That's the best thing you could ever get.

"I'm a Muslim, I'm not a terrorist. After everything that's been happening around the world... I'm so happy to say that a stranger can come and hug a stranger just to let you know that you're not a terrorist."

Speaking to the Mirror, Hassan added: "To be honest I was shocked.

"It was so nice to see people showing love to a complete stranger like that.

"One woman said to me: 'You're a human first' and that summed up the whole experiment for me."

Hstar regularly posts social experiments and pranks on his YouTube channel .

You can also follow him on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram .

Last year, following the Paris terror attacks, teenager Yusef Pirot went viral when he stood blindfolded in the middle of Nottingham city centre for two hours with a sign around his neck saying: "I trust you. Do you trust me? Give me a hug."

Malala Yousafzai - Nobel Lecture

Nobel Lecture by Malala Yousafzai, Oslo, 10 December 2014

Bismillah hir rahman ir rahim.
In the name of God, the most merciful, the most beneficent
.
Your Majesties, Your royal highnesses, distinguished members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee(挪威諾貝爾委員會),
Dear sisters and brothers, today is a day of great happiness for me. I am humbled that the Nobel Committee has selected me for this precious award.
Thank you to everyone for your continued support and love. Thank you for the letters and cards that I still receive from all around the world. Your kind and encouraging words strengthens and inspires me.
I would like to thank my parents for their unconditional love. Thank you to my father for not clipping my wings and for letting me fly. Thank you to my mother for inspiring me to be patient and to always speak the truth - which we strongly believe is the true message of Islam. And also thank you to all my wonderful teachers, who inspired me to believe in myself and be brave.
I am proud, well in fact, I am very proud to be the first Pashtun, the first Pakistani, and the youngest person to receive this award. Along with that, along with that, I am pretty certain that I am also the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize who still fights with her younger brothers. I want there to be peace everywhere, but my brothers and I are still working on that.
I am also honoured to receive this award together with Kailash Satyarthi, who has been a champion for children's rights for a long time. Twice as long, in fact, than I have been alive. I am proud that we can work together, we can work together and show the world that an Indian and a Pakistani, they can work together and achieve their goals of children's rights.
Dear brothers and sisters, I was named after the inspirational Malalai of Maiwand who is the Pashtun Joan of Arc. The word Malala means grief stricken", sad", but in order to lend some happiness to it, my grandfather would always call me Malala – The happiest girl in the world" and today I am very happy that we are together fighting for an important cause.
This award is not just for me. It is for those forgotten children who want education. It is for those frightened children who want peace. It is for those voiceless children who want change.
I am hertime to take action so it becomes the last time, the last time, so it becomes the last time that we see a child deprived of education.
I have found that people describe me in many different ways.
Some people call me the girl who was shot by the Taliban(塔利班).
Some people, call me a "Nobel Laureate" now.
